A Christmas Star

quilt

I always wanted a Christmas quilt for the bed. I call this one my 11 day wonder because 11 days prior to the Christmas of 1993, I started machine piecing it using Eleanor Burns' method of making of a Radiant Star. The binding was put on Christmas Eve. It has machine quilted feathers in the border and is heavily stippled.

Miniature house

Christmas house

My first purchase was a woman and a child. Martin then made a quilt frame for her. Naturally she is working on a quilt. She is seated on a chair which was made from an old frying pan handle. The next thing Martin made was the house from a wine bottle box and the flooring from left over tile project. I made little quilts for the wall, and purchased a miniature dress form and sewing machine. If you will notice, there is a baby in a cradle with a quilt. The baby is all of 1¼" long and I made a sleeping gown for it with draw string bottom. The cradle was made of ice cream pop sticks and the quilt is actually quilted. The dimensions are 1¼"x1¼". The photo was taken at Christmas time when a miniature tree was decorated with beads as ornaments.

Christmas skirts

quilt

An original appliqued design. Machine appliqued and hand quilted. This pattern was also made into a tablecloth where the angels were green calico with gold lame wings and bugles. Napkins were made of matching green calico.

Instructions

To save patterns to your hard drive, click your right mouse button and save image as... give it a title and remember where you saved it.
Tape newsprint to accommodate 65" circle. With a compass, make a smaller circle in the center that measures 8" across. Fold paper in half to get the diameter. Fold in half again until you get the same amount of lines as in the diagram below.

pattern

Cut the outside and inside of the pattern. Place on fabric and transfer markings to fabric. Applique enlarged angels (Enlarge to fit on page 8.5x11) to every other line centering each one.

Instructions

Cut diamond pattern 2¼" wide x 3¾" high. Add ¼" SA.
Cut12 red diamonds for the centers. I used 5 red prints and 5 green prints for the logs. Cut red print and green print strips 1½" wide. I'm sorry I can't give the exact lengths but you can cut across your fabric a little at a time.
Attach red strip to one side of diamond with ¼" . With rotary cutter and rule, trim the excess so that the sides are even with the diamond.
pattern

Keep adding strips, log cabin style, trimming as you go along, until you have 5 complete rows of reds and greens. Make 12 blocks.
pattern
Attach 6 diamonds to form a star but leave one seam open. Attach the other 6 diamond logs sideways between the star sections.
pattern
Cut a backing and batting to fit the top. Place backing on skirt top, right sides together.Place batting over the 2 layers and stitch leaving an opening to turn. After turning inside out hand stitch to close. Quilt. Cut a hole in the center to accomodate your tree and bias bind to enclose.
pattern
Attach velcro to skirt so that edges of star can be closed.
